How to best care for the caregiver

Local advisor’s have a crucial leadership role when it comes to initiating discussions with your communities about how to Prepare for Care.  Whether long or short term, today’s families need a plan to cover the care of themselves or for a loved one.

In a recent editorial published by USA Today, actor Rob Lowe highlights some of the issues faced by the caregiver.  Rob, along with his brothers, cared for their mother during her battle with stage 4 breast cancer.

He highlights some of the challenges the caregivers face from hospital to hospice care, managing her medical paperwork, medications and in-house help. He also dealt with continually redefining an ever-changing “new normal” for them. Rob describes how he often felt overwhelmed, which is why having a plan for long term care is just as important for those who will answer the call for help.  Read the full article here.

Given the nature of Long-Term Care, it’s not surprising that costs are high. According to a 2016 study conducted by Genworth-Financial, a Long-Term Care insurance carrier, the average monthly costs for Long-Term Care can include: $3,813 for home health care; $3,628 for assisted living facilities; and between $7,000 and $8,000 for nursing homes. In addition to monetary expenses, Long-Term Care can also take a toll emotionally on those who are taking care of their loved ones.

When discussing care options with your clients don’t just think traditional long term care.  There are many affordable products that can bridge the gap between no plan and a comprehensive LTC plan –  think of the role that cash from an Accident, Disability, Cancer, Short Term Recovery or  Critical illness could play.  For those that understand the need and can afford the solution, traditional Long Term Care or Life Insurance/LTC hybrids are options that provide critical relief and security in the event of a family care need.   All of these products provide financial support in critical times.

LeClair Group’s Long Term Care, Disability Income, and Life Insurance team specializes in income and asset protection.  Anyone who has been through a care giving events understands the role money plays in providing relief or comprehensive care, our team can help you start the conversation.
